Why do so many BitTorrent peers use an unencrypted connection?
In my Transmission's encryption settings, there are 3 options: "Allow Encryption", "Prefer Encryption", and "Require Encryption".
When using a setting that allows unencrypted connections, I've noticed that lots of people connect without encryption.
What would be some possible reasons for an unencrypted link? I get that not everybody uses Transmission, so some of them may hav a setting to force/prefer non-encrypted connections, but why on earth would someone choose this setting?
I know that unencrypted connections are referred to as "legacy" connections, but I don't think a significant portion of Torrent users are basking in the nostalgia of the original 2001 client, so what's going on?
